Just Giving You My Two Puggy Pennies Worth (Or Cents)

And the Winner is...

How excited was I when I was asked to join Team Pug Nation of LA at the 2020 Hallmark American Rescue Dog Show!!

We were to compete for a place in the ‘Best Wrinkles’ category, and I knew a fun day was ahead with an important message…’the most loving dog breed of the world, is called RESCUED’.

When we were actually in the show, my 24 pug mates and I would be wearing the same black outfit, but it didn’t mean I couldn’t roll up with a little sparkle!

Upon arrival in my shimmer and pearl set, we were shown to our dressing rooms where I got to hang with my pals whilst our hoomans went off to look decent with the help of the TV hair and make up crew...us pugs can generally rely on our natural beauty...but I did opt for a brush up and scrub the day before.

Once the hoomans looked good, we changed into our black harnesses and off we trotted in convoy into the studio.  The Great Danes were still in the arena showing off their sofa lounging skills competing in the ‘Best Couch Potato’ category. They were doing a good job, but I think us pugs could teach them a thing or two.  We are often an energetic and spritely bunch, but some of us like nothing more than to loaf about...especially my friend Gracie.

We were mingling backstage, chatting and getting tickles from the Presenters and Production Crew, and then we were lined up on the red carpet.  After the paparazzi had got their fill, and we’d enjoyed a little refreshment, we were ready to show the judges exactly what we are made of!  A good friend, Bossman was first, and he wowed the audience with his little wheelchair trot.  He’s doing amazing - he only got his wheels from the High Rollers Club a few months ago and now there is no stopping him.

One by one, we trotted out in true Crufts style, and then we each had a little ‘lookover’ by the judge...some of us gave her a little more attention than she may have expected….sorry...can’t curb my enthusiasm!

After what seemed like a whole day (surely those treats in the hospitality suite were missing us), 8 of us were selected to stand out for a 2nd lap. My name was called as well as some of my besties, inc Gracie, Marty, Bossman and three pugs who are awaiting homes in the Pug Nation Station, so we were all pleased for them too - what a result!!

We were all waiting in anticipation...the audience kept laughing so we must have been doing some funny things, and I was trying to sit very upright, head held high, but the studio lights and the very luxurious carpet made me feel a little sleepy so I had a little power nap until the winner of our category was announced.

I took a sneak peak at Gwenn and my pal Chowder.  Gwenn is the CEO at Pug Nation LA and I thought how proud she must feel looking at us all here, knowing all our backgrounds and the situations we all came from; and in turn I was extremely proud of Gwenn and her team for helping us all find our forever happy homes.  I always have special kisses for Gwenn - she is my fairy pugmother.

Just as I was reflecting on my journey, the winner was announced…YIPPEE it was my pal Marty!!...He is quite majestic! We couldn’t wait to congratulate him and we all crowded round to look at his big green rosette.  Off to the semi-finals was our Marty!

With such excitement, we all ran around the arena.  Some of us went a bit crazy and Ernie and I decided we’d run out of the arena and into the audience...you’ve gotta meet your fans after all. I loved every minute of that!  The audience kept applauding so I kept running.  No one could stop me - they were laughing too much. The hooman wasn’t sure if my antics were funny or naughty!!

Eventually I gave in and came back and we walked proudly backstage to our dressing rooms to de-robe and hit the treat bar.  After a few rounds and a group photo and hug, we said goodbye.  We had to make room for the Beagles who were up next and I for one was ready to nap and dream of pug domination.

Thank you Pug Nation for rescuing me. Thank you Hallmark Channel for highlighting rescue dogs and rescue organizations; and creating a platform for us to shine and promote the ‘Adopt, Don’t Shop’ message.

What a fun day!

Watch our antics on the Hallmark Channel on 16th & 17th February 2020.

30 minutes later we pulled up outside our mini-getaway hotel where we expected to chill out and be poolside babes for the next few days. We all kind of looked at each other as it wasn’t quite as we imagined. There were a few questionable sights in the hotel lobby which made the hair on the back of our necks stand up. Upon entering our garden room I felt like it resembled a breeze block cell with a concrete yard - not quite the chilled out palm tree vibes we envisaged. The chair by the rusty desk looked as if it had come from the local primary school, complete with paint splashes and tippex drops. Mum said it was ‘the look’. Aunt S said ‘that’s not a look!!’ Off to speak to the manager we did, who was extremely nice and understood that our expectations were a little different to reality, so he kindly cancelled our reservation. I am sure we would have had a good time. It just seemed to be very busy and having not been anywhere busy for over a year, it wasn’t the vibe we were looking for. So off we trotted to a vision of pink 30 mins up the road... The Sands Hotel and Spa in Indian Wells.

Adventures await….but they will have to wait for a little while longer!! Our adventures have been put on hold as we are stay at home during the Covid-19 Lockdowns. It’s been rather a change to my social calendar to not be travelling, meeting my pug friends and attending the events I am so very used to enjoying.

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, 5 little pugs gathered together for a funfilled day. One was dressed in red, one was dressed in pink. One was dashing in a tux with a silver cufflink. One was laden in lace And one arrived in a car at quite a pace!!

My besties and I decided we needed a really good chill out session after our hectic festive season...so we pawed around and found a fantastic modern, dog friendly Airbnb in Downtown Palm Springs, where we really could live out the Pug Life.

So, during the 160 miles along the 10 and the 60 freeways to the Joshua Tree National Park , I nap for 40 minutes, have a tinkle, a tickle and a pugachino at Starbucks, gawp at the Iron Giants (ie:the solar windmills) and marvel at how far your buck goes on a brand spanking new mansion on this stretch of the road compared to TinsleTown. Maybe I'll move out here so I have more pennies in my puggy bank, and I'll be much closer to these weirdly wonderful shaped trees I like to look at.

In October, 2019, we loaded up my trusty carriage and drove off up the 5 freeway to Redding which was our first quick overnight stop to get us from LA to the Oregon Coast where we would be spending 4 nights by the beach, before driving slowly down the 1 back to LA. I have been along the Oregon Coast before, back in 2017 when we drove up to Portland and watched the solar eclipse with my friends who did live there, but have now moved to Colorado (I feel another road trip coming on!). I loved the ruggedness of the shorelines there and we all said we would love to come back...so true to our word, that is what we did! On a little bit of a time and budget restraint this trip, we opted to have two pretty much full days of driving, to allow us to stay a while and appreciate the beauty of the Oregon beach town Bandon which is where we had opted to base ourselves. We chose Bandon as we had been before, liked it and wasn’t as far as other very likeable beach towns like Cannon Beach.
