Just Giving You My Two Puggy Pennies Worth (Or Cents)

Read A Little Dream With Me!

This year I think I am going to be in a few Christmas stockings...and I am super excited!

2020 hasn’t been quite the year any of us expected when we sang Auld Lang Syne during the last moments of 2019 with our dear friends who had travelled from London to LA to celebrate good times past and adventures to come.  Hollering Europe’s Final Countdown, Robbie Williams’s Millenium and accurately mimicking Pink’s Raise Your Glass, we had no idea 2 months into 2020, a year that typographically looks so promising on paper, the whole world would change dramatically in a way that would impact everyone.

With mixed emotions of the appearance of Covid-19 and it’s alien concepts of quarantine, stay at home orders and social distancing, our little world certainly closed down.  We’d had two great earlier months of pug vacays, pug gatherings and pug parties and never expected similar rendezvous, as well as several road trips and travels abroad to be suddenly excluded from our calendar.

LA more than many other counties in the US, and even many near us, has spent the better part of this year under relatively strict restrictions.  With the list of places to go to and those who we could go with rather minimal, we decided to start doing some of the home-based ‘little projects’ we have always thought of doing but somehow not managed to.

So, the days (and some late nights) stopped being thought of as gloomy and depressing.  They started to become fun and inspiring...and well rather entertaining.  I did a lot of posing and Mum did a lot of polishing forgotten skills.  Words came together to create little stories that made us laugh, and I was photographed (a lot!) to provide material for the illustrations which would bring the tales to life.  Pops took on the role of our technical advisor and between us we came up with a little book which we thought would be enjoyed by four very special girls in our lives, and a bonus, with luck, some puggy (and unpuggy) friends might like it too.

So….The Pug, The Pumpkin & Other Curiously Curly Tails was born.

The book is, well we think, a very cute anthology of original and full color illustrated fairy tales about the fantasies and dreams of a curious and adventurous little pug...oh could that be me!!!.  The four short stories take the reader through a world where they witness the most joyous sight to behold, frolic around an enchanted forest, embark on a secret mission through the cobbled streets of England, and gain a backstage pass to the origins of an overnight singing sensation.

We are very pleased to have published this book on Amazon and are already creating more literary adventures...when you can’t experience magical things in reality, you can always experience them in make believe!!

This NYE we will be surely singing along with the Goo Goo Dolls and wishing for Better days...we may not be partying side by side, hugging and dancing, but we will likely raise that glass to 2021 with our friends via zoom...and then cosy up, tails tucked in and enjoy a little bedtime story!

30 minutes later we pulled up outside our mini-getaway hotel where we expected to chill out and be poolside babes for the next few days. We all kind of looked at each other as it wasn’t quite as we imagined. There were a few questionable sights in the hotel lobby which made the hair on the back of our necks stand up. Upon entering our garden room I felt like it resembled a breeze block cell with a concrete yard - not quite the chilled out palm tree vibes we envisaged. The chair by the rusty desk looked as if it had come from the local primary school, complete with paint splashes and tippex drops. Mum said it was ‘the look’. Aunt S said ‘that’s not a look!!’ Off to speak to the manager we did, who was extremely nice and understood that our expectations were a little different to reality, so he kindly cancelled our reservation. I am sure we would have had a good time. It just seemed to be very busy and having not been anywhere busy for over a year, it wasn’t the vibe we were looking for. So off we trotted to a vision of pink 30 mins up the road... The Sands Hotel and Spa in Indian Wells.

Adventures await….but they will have to wait for a little while longer!! Our adventures have been put on hold as we are stay at home during the Covid-19 Lockdowns. It’s been rather a change to my social calendar to not be travelling, meeting my pug friends and attending the events I am so very used to enjoying.

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, 5 little pugs gathered together for a funfilled day. One was dressed in red, one was dressed in pink. One was dashing in a tux with a silver cufflink. One was laden in lace And one arrived in a car at quite a pace!!

My besties and I decided we needed a really good chill out session after our hectic festive season...so we pawed around and found a fantastic modern, dog friendly Airbnb in Downtown Palm Springs, where we really could live out the Pug Life.

So, during the 160 miles along the 10 and the 60 freeways to the Joshua Tree National Park , I nap for 40 minutes, have a tinkle, a tickle and a pugachino at Starbucks, gawp at the Iron Giants (ie:the solar windmills) and marvel at how far your buck goes on a brand spanking new mansion on this stretch of the road compared to TinsleTown. Maybe I'll move out here so I have more pennies in my puggy bank, and I'll be much closer to these weirdly wonderful shaped trees I like to look at.

In October, 2019, we loaded up my trusty carriage and drove off up the 5 freeway to Redding which was our first quick overnight stop to get us from LA to the Oregon Coast where we would be spending 4 nights by the beach, before driving slowly down the 1 back to LA. I have been along the Oregon Coast before, back in 2017 when we drove up to Portland and watched the solar eclipse with my friends who did live there, but have now moved to Colorado (I feel another road trip coming on!). I loved the ruggedness of the shorelines there and we all said we would love to come back...so true to our word, that is what we did! On a little bit of a time and budget restraint this trip, we opted to have two pretty much full days of driving, to allow us to stay a while and appreciate the beauty of the Oregon beach town Bandon which is where we had opted to base ourselves. We chose Bandon as we had been before, liked it and wasn’t as far as other very likeable beach towns like Cannon Beach.
