Just Giving You My Two Puggy Pennies Worth (Or Cents)

A Palm Springs Getaway

My besties and I decided we needed a really good chill out session after our hectic festive season...so we pawed around and found a fantastic modern, dog friendly Airbnb in Downtown Palm Springs, where we really could live out the Pug Life.

So, my friends, Monty, Ivy, George, Taz and I had a fun drive up the 10 from LA to Palm Springs.  We were so excited to be spending the whole weekend together and the car was loaded with enough snacks for an army of pugs, not just our grumble.  You would not believe how full the trunk was with all our weekend party kit.  It already had the makings of an epic few days!!

We all had big smiles as we pulled up to our accommodation for the next few days.  I instantly spied the big yellow doors, and knew where I would be posing with my hat!!

Once inside we ran around choosing our bedrooms and then we went crazy when we saw the pool and the gardens - just beautiful…..and a sun lounger each!!!!

The minutes turned into hours, and the hours turned into days, as we lounged, laughed and lazed.  It was so relaxing to just hang out together.  The days were warm and bright and the evenings we snuggled around the fire pit and star gazed.

We were having so much fun that Monty, Ivy and I decided to stay an extra day.  Who can blame us - we had an ideal place to hang out together, huge pool inflatables to float around on and our Butlers delivering tasty snacks and cool drinks!  What’s not to like!!

Before heading back to LA, we grabbed a Pupachino and had a little wander around town.   A few years ago, Monty had stayed at the very beautiful Morrocan inspired hotel Korakia Pensione situated in the centre of Downtown Palm Springs, so he showed me around and we decided we would very much like to chill out there on one of our next visits.

It was fun to wander around and have a little mooch in the stores - there are a few doggy ones there which I had been to before, so will pop in on our next visit.  We didn't have room in the car for anything else - when you have a inflatable Unicorn and giant pug head in the back, there's not a lot room left for a squeaky toy!

With all our little faces pressed to the window, our eyes spotted a huge figure appearing in the distance.  As we got closer and pulled over, we realised it was a dinosaur and we were at the home of the Cabazon Dinosaurs.  I had driven past here loads, but had never stopped.

Never ones to pass on a cool photo op, we bowled out of the car and went to have a snoop.  What a fun thing to see off the side of the highway.  After our chauffeurs tasted a delicious Date Shake from Hadley Fruit Orchards, we were back on our way back to LA!

We had fun Palm Springs...we will see you again soon!!

30 minutes later we pulled up outside our mini-getaway hotel where we expected to chill out and be poolside babes for the next few days. We all kind of looked at each other as it wasn’t quite as we imagined. There were a few questionable sights in the hotel lobby which made the hair on the back of our necks stand up. Upon entering our garden room I felt like it resembled a breeze block cell with a concrete yard - not quite the chilled out palm tree vibes we envisaged. The chair by the rusty desk looked as if it had come from the local primary school, complete with paint splashes and tippex drops. Mum said it was ‘the look’. Aunt S said ‘that’s not a look!!’ Off to speak to the manager we did, who was extremely nice and understood that our expectations were a little different to reality, so he kindly cancelled our reservation. I am sure we would have had a good time. It just seemed to be very busy and having not been anywhere busy for over a year, it wasn’t the vibe we were looking for. So off we trotted to a vision of pink 30 mins up the road... The Sands Hotel and Spa in Indian Wells.

Adventures await….but they will have to wait for a little while longer!! Our adventures have been put on hold as we are stay at home during the Covid-19 Lockdowns. It’s been rather a change to my social calendar to not be travelling, meeting my pug friends and attending the events I am so very used to enjoying.

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, 5 little pugs gathered together for a funfilled day. One was dressed in red, one was dressed in pink. One was dashing in a tux with a silver cufflink. One was laden in lace And one arrived in a car at quite a pace!!

So, during the 160 miles along the 10 and the 60 freeways to the Joshua Tree National Park , I nap for 40 minutes, have a tinkle, a tickle and a pugachino at Starbucks, gawp at the Iron Giants (ie:the solar windmills) and marvel at how far your buck goes on a brand spanking new mansion on this stretch of the road compared to TinsleTown. Maybe I'll move out here so I have more pennies in my puggy bank, and I'll be much closer to these weirdly wonderful shaped trees I like to look at.

In October, 2019, we loaded up my trusty carriage and drove off up the 5 freeway to Redding which was our first quick overnight stop to get us from LA to the Oregon Coast where we would be spending 4 nights by the beach, before driving slowly down the 1 back to LA. I have been along the Oregon Coast before, back in 2017 when we drove up to Portland and watched the solar eclipse with my friends who did live there, but have now moved to Colorado (I feel another road trip coming on!). I loved the ruggedness of the shorelines there and we all said we would love to come back...so true to our word, that is what we did! On a little bit of a time and budget restraint this trip, we opted to have two pretty much full days of driving, to allow us to stay a while and appreciate the beauty of the Oregon beach town Bandon which is where we had opted to base ourselves. We chose Bandon as we had been before, liked it and wasn’t as far as other very likeable beach towns like Cannon Beach.
