Just Giving You My Two Puggy Pennies Worth (Or Cents)

A Tactless Blunder.

A waltz along the Vegas Strip - enjoyable sights and an embarrassing scenario.

I have a lovely friend called Garbo, who is a King Charles Spaniel.  She lives in Los Angeles too and we met at a Wine and Dine With Your Dogs event...and that's what we do!!  So we therefore like looking out for cool places to visit.  We also spend a lot of time at the beach together and have been on a few trips away, including a weekend in San Francisco, and my hooman had a few days with her when Garbo went to Paris last summer.  I had to stay home with my Pops as mum was going back to England for a month to see family, so I missed out on that little Parisian adventure!

I will prob tell you a few stories of her trip that I got told upon her return as I am sure it will make an interesting read, but for now, here is our little Vegas  jaunt.

It so happened that Garbo drove to Vegas the weekend of the Vegas Pug Party, so after I had said goodbye to all my pug pals at the farewell brunch, Garbo and I decided to hit the Strip!!

It was a warm day, but not too hot, and it was earlier, so it wasn’t too busy.  I had tried to walk the Strip previously and it was way too busy for my little self to be trotting along.  It's often way too hot for me and my paws, so I tend to miss out on most of the vegas trips, unless we go in the winter months or to the fabulous annual Vegas Pug Party event. Plus, there is a safety rule that states that dogs are NOT allowed on the strip between the hours of Noon - 5.00am. So we took this opportunity of us both being there, and it being an ok temperature to have a little snoop.

Love it, or hate it, Vegas isn’t like anything you’ve really seen before, and as we walked down Flamingo, the bellagio fountains came into view and with the brilliant blue skies, it was an exciting sight.

We excitedly crossed over the huge road, which isn't as easy as it sounds as we had to walk up some stairs, cross over a bridge, walk into the actual Bellagio, travel down an escalator, and only then were we at our destination. That took a fair while as you know, lots of people want to pet us along the way, so its stop start, tickle tickle. By that time the fountains had stopped, so we looked at each other and one of us ‘may’ have stuck their tongue out!

Having made it this far, we weren't going home without seeing them close up, so my little furry mat came out. Whilst we waited for the fountains to spring to life, we sat (comfortably) on the Bellagio wall and took in the sights which surrounded us. I liked looking at the Eiffel Tower but Garbo said it wasn’t as cool as the real thing!  (well I wouldn’t know as I got left behind on that trip!!). After the initial excitement of seeing all these ginormous buildings, and being tickled and having our photos taken by passers-by (I actually think many passed by us on purpose just to say hello), I found it all very relaxing and lay down for a little nap.  BOOM!!!  Wow, those fountains don’t half have some oomph!!  They had started alright!!!

I was impressed with the power of the jets and I did get a bit of mist on my face - quite refreshing.  At one point a beautifiul rainbow shone. We loved it as one of the songs was 'Time To Say Goodbye' and that is a favourite of my Grandpas.

‘Who are those heavenly creatures in those vibrant pink fluffy feathers?!’ we both thought.  So we had to go and have a nose.  Up the strip, were two very lovely show girls who cuddled us and tickled us and took me for a walk.  I thought I had fancy outfits, but well, these were special…..what there was of them! I hope my nails didn’t scratch their naked bits!!  Especially as we didn’t have much pocket money between us and I could only find a fiver in my denim jacket pocket. Turns out the going rate is $20...or so we were told, so we sort of sheepishly trotted off with our tails between our legs. The hoomans following with rather red faces! It must have been a long time since a $1 a photo with Spiderman was deemed acceptable!  I guess feathers are harder to keep clean than lycra!

After that little faux pas it was time for a little refreshment, so we headed to the Bouchon Bakery at The Venetian. However, we got slightly distracted outside the hotel by the sparking waters of the Venice canals and the tuneful singing gondolier pilots navigating the gondolas through the bridges. It was getting a bit hot and busy by then, and my Pops had text us to say he had checked out of the hotel and was sat in the lobby waiting for us ‘no rush, but I am waiting’ he says!. Therefore we didn’t ask if a little Pug and her friend could ride, but I am hoping they would let us, however we did note that The Venetian Resort’s dog-friendly pilot program has come to an end, so maybe not!

We did have a little wander in though just to have a little cool down and we happily sat by one of the indoor fountains, and we seemed ok to do so.  But then we got another text from Pops…’I have finished my coffee’....so we thought we had better not overstay our welcome and we headed towards Pops and our awaiting car, packed with all my suitcases and swag.  Garbo was travelling back separately, so we said our goodbyes, got strapped into the car and started the slow journey back to LA!

30 minutes later we pulled up outside our mini-getaway hotel where we expected to chill out and be poolside babes for the next few days. We all kind of looked at each other as it wasn’t quite as we imagined. There were a few questionable sights in the hotel lobby which made the hair on the back of our necks stand up. Upon entering our garden room I felt like it resembled a breeze block cell with a concrete yard - not quite the chilled out palm tree vibes we envisaged. The chair by the rusty desk looked as if it had come from the local primary school, complete with paint splashes and tippex drops. Mum said it was ‘the look’. Aunt S said ‘that’s not a look!!’ Off to speak to the manager we did, who was extremely nice and understood that our expectations were a little different to reality, so he kindly cancelled our reservation. I am sure we would have had a good time. It just seemed to be very busy and having not been anywhere busy for over a year, it wasn’t the vibe we were looking for. So off we trotted to a vision of pink 30 mins up the road... The Sands Hotel and Spa in Indian Wells.

Adventures await….but they will have to wait for a little while longer!! Our adventures have been put on hold as we are stay at home during the Covid-19 Lockdowns. It’s been rather a change to my social calendar to not be travelling, meeting my pug friends and attending the events I am so very used to enjoying.

Once upon a time, in a land not so far away, 5 little pugs gathered together for a funfilled day. One was dressed in red, one was dressed in pink. One was dashing in a tux with a silver cufflink. One was laden in lace And one arrived in a car at quite a pace!!

My besties and I decided we needed a really good chill out session after our hectic festive season...so we pawed around and found a fantastic modern, dog friendly Airbnb in Downtown Palm Springs, where we really could live out the Pug Life.

So, during the 160 miles along the 10 and the 60 freeways to the Joshua Tree National Park , I nap for 40 minutes, have a tinkle, a tickle and a pugachino at Starbucks, gawp at the Iron Giants (ie:the solar windmills) and marvel at how far your buck goes on a brand spanking new mansion on this stretch of the road compared to TinsleTown. Maybe I'll move out here so I have more pennies in my puggy bank, and I'll be much closer to these weirdly wonderful shaped trees I like to look at.

In October, 2019, we loaded up my trusty carriage and drove off up the 5 freeway to Redding which was our first quick overnight stop to get us from LA to the Oregon Coast where we would be spending 4 nights by the beach, before driving slowly down the 1 back to LA. I have been along the Oregon Coast before, back in 2017 when we drove up to Portland and watched the solar eclipse with my friends who did live there, but have now moved to Colorado (I feel another road trip coming on!). I loved the ruggedness of the shorelines there and we all said we would love to come back...so true to our word, that is what we did! On a little bit of a time and budget restraint this trip, we opted to have two pretty much full days of driving, to allow us to stay a while and appreciate the beauty of the Oregon beach town Bandon which is where we had opted to base ourselves. We chose Bandon as we had been before, liked it and wasn’t as far as other very likeable beach towns like Cannon Beach.
