On a beautiful warm late-June afternoon, it wasn't just the sun which glistened. Down at Pug Nation Rescue of LA's 1st Fashion Show Fundraiser, pugs galore strutted their stuff on the runway and truly shined!

What could be cuter than Pugs? Pugs in cute clothes! What could be cuter than pugs in cute clothes? Pugs in cute clothes raising money and helping their fellow pugs find their new homes (and for some, cute clothes of their own!). And that is exactly what happened on Saturday 25th June 2022 at the Pug Nation LA's first Fashion Show extravaganza!!

As a Pug Nation LA graduate, I was honored to be asked to help organize the event which was to take place at Pug Nation LA's facility, affectionally known as 'The Pubble'. What a great way to showcase not only many of the clothes designers that have made things for me over the years, but also the adoptable pugs residing at The Pubble waiting for their forever homes, and in the process,

We were so very fortunate to be supported by a fantastic selection of designers, and we are immensely grateful for the interest and generosity they showed to this event. We can't thank them enough for taking part and really making sure it was a highly stylish and fun event. Lots of our friends came out to help out on the day, taking on roles as dressers and pug runway walkers - we could not have done the show without them - thank you! My friend @theweeklyrunt helped us so much not only on the day, but on the run up to the event and brought some fabulous designers to the runway - just brilliant - thank you!

30 minutes later we pulled up outside our mini-getaway hotel where we expected to chill out and be poolside babes for the next few days. We all kind of looked at each other as it wasn’t quite as we imagined. There were a few questionable sights in the hotel lobby which made the hair on the back of our necks stand up. Upon entering our garden room I felt like it resembled a breeze block cell with a concrete yard - not quite the chilled out palm tree vibes we envisaged. The chair by the rusty desk looked as if it had come from the local primary school, complete with paint splashes and tippex drops. Mum said it was ‘the look’. Aunt S said ‘that’s not a look!!’

Off to speak to the manager we did, who was extremely nice and understood that our expectations were a little different to reality, so he kindly cancelled our reservation. I am sure we would have had a good time. It just seemed to be very busy and having not been anywhere busy for over a year, it wasn’t the vibe we were looking for.

2020 hasn’t been quite the year any of us expected when we sang Auld Lang Syne during the last moments of 2019 with our dear friends who had travelled from London to LA to celebrate good times past and adventures to come. Hollering Europe’s Final Countdown, Robbie Williams’s Millenium and accurately mimicking Pink’s Raise Your Glass, we had no idea 2 months into 2020, a year that typographically looks so promising on paper, the whole world would change dramatically in a way that would impact everyone.

With mixed emotions of the appearance of Covid-19 and it’s alien concepts of quarantine, stay at home orders and social distancing, our little world certainly closed down. We’d had two great earlier months of pug vacays, pug gatherings and pug parties and never expected similar rendezvous, as well as several road trips and travels abroad to be suddenly excluded from our calendar.

LA more than many other counties in the US, and even many near us, has spent the better part of this year under relatively strict restrictions. With the list of places to go to and those who we could go with rather minimal, we decided to start doing some of the home-based ‘little projects’ we have always thought of doing but somehow not managed to.

So, the days (and some late nights) stopped being thought of as gloomy and depressing. They started to become fun and inspiring...and well rather entertaining. I did a lot of posing and Mum did a lot of polishing forgotten skills. Words came together to create little stories that made us laugh, and I was photographed (a lot!) to provide material for the illustrations which would bring the tales to life. Pops took on the role of our technical advisor and between us we came up with a little book which we thought would be enjoyed by four very special girls in our lives, and a bonus, with luck, some puggy (and unpuggy) friends might like it too.

So….The Pug, The Pumpkin & Other Curiously Curly Tails was born.

After what seemed like a whole day (surely those treats in the hospitality suite were missing us), 8 of us were selected to stand out for a 2nd lap. My name was called as well as some of my besties, inc Gracie, Marty, Bossman and three pugs who are awaiting homes in the Pug Nation Station, so we were all pleased for them too - what a result!!

We were all waiting in anticipation...the audience kept laughing so we must have been doing some funny things, and I was trying to sit very upright, head held high, but the studio lights and the very luxurious carpet made me feel a little sleepy so I had a little power nap until the winner of our category was announced.

, I nap for 40 minutes, have a tinkle, a tickle and a pugachino at Starbucks, gawp at the Iron Giants (ie:the solar windmills) and marvel at how far your buck goes on a brand spanking new mansion on this stretch of the road compared to TinsleTown. Maybe I'll move out here so I have more pennies in my puggy bank, and I'll be much closer to these weirdly wonderful shaped trees I like to look at.

In October, 2019, we loaded up my trusty carriage and drove off up the 5 freeway to Redding which was our first quick overnight stop to get us from LA to the Oregon Coast where we would be spending 4 nights by the beach, before driving slowly down the 1 back to LA. I have been along the Oregon Coast before, back in 2017 when we drove up to Portland and watched the solar eclipse with my friends who did live there, but have now moved to Colorado (I feel another road trip coming on!). I loved the ruggedness of the shorelines there and we all said we would love to come back...so true to our word, that is what we did! On a little bit of a time and budget restraint this trip, we opted to have two pretty much full days of driving, to allow us to stay a while and appreciate the beauty of the Oregon beach town Bandon which is where we had opted to base ourselves. We chose Bandon as we had been before, liked it and wasn’t as far as other very likeable beach towns like Cannon Beach.

My Hoomans love to take me with them on trips, but there is always one problem that we cant ignore - and that is where to eat!!

Many Hotels are now pug friendly, and thats much appreciated, but eating out varies enormously. Its not unusual for us to find that a ‘pug friendly' hotel has nowhere that my hoomans can eat with me - and of course I am never allowed to stay in the room alone !! Room service pizza gets boring even for me after a while!

There are some fantastic places we have been that ‘get it', and go out of their way to make it easy - but sadly many more that hide behind the ‘health department rules' - and whatever those rules are they don't make sense! My Pops has planned to do some research into these rules, but many of them are local and so when travelling you never know. Apparently there is no Federal law, but Health Dept guidelines that are often enforced locally and randomly. And often based on opinions rather than facts -

In 2015 California did enact a law that allows dogs on a patio - at the restaurants discretion and subject to some rules. Certainly outside patio dining is always the first place we look, and fortunately in California the weather is generally acceptable. But Oregon in the fall and winter is a bit different, as is Nevada in the summer!
